Quote

No the Day of Relief has not come yet but I thought I might leave you with a recent quote to ponder, feel free to comment on it...

"People don't usually believe something because it's proved, but because it's better." ---K. Sparks

Maybe this example will help. If i have the choice of steak or a McDonalds cheeseburger im going to choose steak. Why? Because the steak tastes better. If someone tried to prove to me that the steak was better because of the meat consistency, where it was taken from the cow and how the cow was treated, it wouldnt make much of a difference to me cause i like my McDonalds cheeseburger. I will only really believe it when i eat it and realize my life will be better off with steak instead of a fastfood cheeseburger. So I guess in a way, the quote hit me in terms of how do I approach others with my faith? Do I try to show hard concrete evidence of God and Jesus or do I try to get people to "taste" this faith. There are many different ways to apply this quote thats what I left it open but thats what hit me.

Also, the words 'believe' 'better' and 'proved' all are fuzzy words without much hard meaning so it makes it hard to pin down an exact meaning of this quote. Dont nessecarily try to look for "what this quote means". But what does it spark in your mind, imagination thoughts? Thats whats so fascinating and great about language, its a dance between the audience and author causing every words and sentence to be deciphered by each group causing many different assumptions and meanings.

I understand your stuggle with it since we are raised to think if it is proved through empirical data/evidence then we have to believe. But i think i am giving believe a different meaning then you might be. I see believe as a change in lifestyle, not a mathmatical problem being 'proved' causing me to 'believe'it. I think in terms of math or physics your probably right, empirical data will cause you to believe it. But with things dealing with lifesyle (food, faith, sex, philosophy, theology etc) I find that I will only really change my view and then my lifestyle(believe) when I find something to be better. I think if i found something better (i know..what does better mean) than Christianity i would probably follow it. I think as humans we all have a inward longing to live the fullest lives possible. Is it money, fame, power, service, faith, charity, freedom of choice, food? You see many people chasing after these things because they believe they are better than anything else. These types of things arent nessecarily like the speed of gravity, they cant be scientifically proved to be the best. I hope my examples dont make you think there is a "correct interpretation" keep wrestling with it. Maybe this quote is a wrestling match instead of a dance for you =).
